Department of Seismology
The key objectives of the Department of Seismology are:
- assessing seismic vulnerability of the region of Caucasus and create corresponding maps for different parameters;
- exploring the earth crust and upper mantle structure by using volume, surface and coda waves;
- studying soil oscillation models by using the normalized methods of the volume as well as seismic coda, and, consequently determining the influence of tectonic fractures on the behavior of waves;
- drawing up a unified magnitude scale for earthquakes and assessing the importance of a suitability coefficient for a specific medium and strong earthquake before and after occurrence of earthquakes, and exploring tension by using the parameter b of Gutenberg–Richter magnitude-frequency distribution, as well as employing these results for forecasting major earthquakes.
